“Why do I keep getting injured even though I’ve been going to the gym for years?”

“I’d like to take up yoga but I’m afraid of hurting myself.”

“I want to increase my running intensity and distance but I want to make sure I do it safely.”

Cornell Physiotherapy is now utilizing the Functional Movement Systems approach to help answer questions like these. One of the tools of this approach is called the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). The FMS is made up of a series of functional tests that are performed by the client. The tests are observed and scored by a physiotherapist. The results enable us to identify problem areas in your body’s movement and recommend corrective exercises to “normalize” your movement. The FMS is made up of 7 tests that can be performed within 10 – 15 minutes. Your score is determined immediately and can give information regarding activities that might be risky for you to participate in until you improve the way your body is moving. Conversely, the results may tell you that you are moving very well and should have no concern about taking on a new activity or increasing your current training.

The results can also be used as a marker for future score comparisons. This will help inform you of whether your lifestyle is affecting your body movements, whether for better or worse.

Can I improve my score?

Most scores can be improved with simple corrective exercises based on your personal test results. A qualified professional can assist you in identifying the corrective exercises that will help you begin moving more efficiently and comfortably.

Who is the FMS meant for?

The FMS can be used on any population: young, old, active, sedentary. Anyone who is interested in knowing their movement quality is welcome to participate in the screening.

Has any research been done on the FMS?

Research has shown that the FMS has some ability to predict risk injury in individuals. It also shows that the scores are modifiable with as little as a 6 week training program.
